They say "two's company" and that is certainly true when is comes to playing Pairs. On Friday 17th April 2026, sixteen Club members gathered to play for the Carbery Memorial Shield a tournament, first held 22 years ago in 2004.
Players were drawn into 8 teams who then played a round robin series of matches to decide the finalists. After some close fought matches the eventual finalists were Roger Wilson and David Dean against Joy Carney and Steve Worthington.
The final was something of a "game of two halves". Joy and Steve took an early lead and were 4-0 up at one stage but some inspired lead play by Dave and super-accurate finishing by Roger saw them gradually draw level and eventually take the lead. The final winning score was 10-5.
Other Prizes awarded on the day were...
BEST SHOT DIFFERENCE: Jan Ovenden and Jim Carter.
MOST SHOTS FOR: Bob Horner and Gill Johnson.
MOST ENDS WON: Dave Ovenden and Roger Stares.
No Winkleigh event is complete without something scrumptious to eat and this was no different. Following the presentation of the prizes everyone sat down to a delicious Devon Cream Tea expertly prepared by Club Secretary Jan Ovenden.
